Harney defends record

Health Minister Mary Harney today defended her record in the face of mounting criticism following the Tallaght Hospital scandal and her lengthy grip to New Zealand.

She dismissed calls for her resignation , claiming it was "unique" to Ireland for politicians to be blamed for medical errors."

Speaking to RTÉ News, the Minister highlighted improvements in the health service, especially in heart and cancer care, over the past five years that she has held the position.

However, she admitted that pressure points remained and that there was 'no magic wand'.

She said the Talaght situation was unacceptable - questions had to be answered and everything was being done to clear up the issue.
