New Drogheda ED opens

A new emergency department is opening today at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda.

The hospital says the new €11.5 million ED promises a much improved service to both patients and staff within the Dublin - North East region.

A changeover plan has been developed to facilitate the transition from the old ED to the new unit. The changeover will require the ED in Our Lady of Lourdes to go on protective call for a short period to facilitate a safe transition, according to the HSE.

During a period of protective call, ambulance services and GPs will be asked to refer some patients to other EDs.

The new ED at the Drogheda hospital is 300% bigger than the existing department and it is expected to help ease some of the pressure on emergency services at the hospital.
