I went in with ongoing respiratory issues on Christmas day. Knowing that I would end up in the Covid dept, I was concerned. Once I opened the door, my concerns left. 100% professional set-up. For further tests I needed to go to the main building which is 20-30m away which takes 1-2 minutes. While waiting for the numerous test results I was given a turkey/chicken sandwich and a cup of tea. Apart from there being no cranberry sauce on my much enjoyed butty, I couldn't even think of a fault. 10/10

Appalling service, no real, patient care. Patient had to be cared for by a relay of relatives. No attempt to assist patient during mealtimes; food just left there and then taken away. Wrong drugs administered on at least one occasion. Appalling attitude from nursing staff and some support nursing staff; many of the contract caterers were great, interacting positively with patients and being human. No doctor obviously in charge; one person did appear to do a well-handled end of life conversation.

I was recently admitted and was looked after as if I was a long lost relative who had returned home for Xmas. All the staff were so caring, kind and helpful with a 'how are you, are you ok?' whenever they passed the bed. They acted as if they loved their job, did it with a smile and made me feel as if I was respected, minded and cared for, for the short time I was there. I actually felt I was in a family setting and that my recovery mattered to them. God bless them and thank you. Laurence

Having first been admitted to the hospital in the mid-80s with little explanation of what was about to happen, rosary nightly, and a four-week stay, I have seen this hospital grow, expand, adjust and develop into a center that has retained a lot of its base qualities and a personal interaction. I totally agree with a lot of comments here negative and positive, but feel our health care system is stretched beyond what’s fair to patient and medical staff. For me, transitioning from one staff member to another should be handled better, and there should be more interactions via zoom for basic consultations, keeping in mind some diagnosis are more visually important to medical staff. Parking is and probably will remain a huge problem. Maybe a shuttle service from train station or bus station would work. But all in all, a great hospital doing its best. It is not always successful but it is trying.

After the misfortune of having to be airlifted by Air Ambulance from my island home, I had the good fortune of outstanding helicopter crew and almost universal kindness, caring and efficiency from medical staff, and also deeply impressed with the humanity and skill with which other elderly very sick patients were treated. Especially at this time of Covid. Every care to prevent and control infection also. A&E excellent and a short wait only before going to a ward. The kindness of staff is outstanding and made a tough time easier. My ongoing condition is under control and I am at peace knowing I have a good hospital nearby.

Maternity Outpatient Appointments - You should have to take a ticket on incoming. People skipping Q,nurses oblivious to this. You go by the rules for appointments and attend exactly at given time and then you don’t get seen on time. Terrible service and not efficient. No wonder people are so mad with health service. Nurses quite abrupt and two patients in at same time in same room having blood pressure taken and urine checked. No privacy or confidentiality.

I had to fight to get my procedure done by consultant when team members could only talk about the negative performance they were going to achieve. I was there for two days and my room was never cleaned. There did not appear to be any process management on the ward. Chaos seemed to be the norm. I witnessed treatment of vulnerable patients which was shameful.

Attended on a Tuesday afternoon with my 11 year old son. Within an hour we had been triaged, seen a doctor, got an x-ray and advice on discharge. Could not believe this as it is always much longer in any other hospital that I have attended. The staff in Mayo General are really organised and professional. Could not rate them highly enough.

I was assessed and information gathered from me on the corridor with other patients and relatives listening. It was a third world experience. The only real professionals I met were the paramedics who brought me in and they don’t work in the hospital.

Nurse very rude, upsetting and insulting patient. Showed no privacy when discussing patient's medical issues. Worst experience ever.

Appalling hospital! Probably the worst in the country or if not, very close to it. I arrived in an ambulance after spending five hours at another hospital waiting for one. I had serious injuries. On arrival at Castlebar I was parched with thirst (shock presumably). All hospital staff ignored my pleas. Eventually a kindly ambulance driver there helped me and brought me several cups of water. It was many many hours before I was sent to x-ray. It was dark in mid-winter and freezing cold outside. I returned from x-ray and at 11pm at night I was told to get out. 'Hop it' I was ordered. I tried to protest but was unable. My son had not yet arrived as he works on the other side of the country. I crawled down on the grass on my hands and knees hoping for refuge. Two hours later I made it as far as a hotel. Horrified by my state they gave me a room and brought me a toothbrush and toothpaste. My son had to give them his credit card details. He arrived to the hotel in the early hours as the hotel had rang him. When light came he took me home. Two days later we got a phone call to get into the hospital immediately because I had a serious injury that required treatment. Over one year later, Mayo General sent payment of my room to the hotel who informed them that they had been paid by my son on the night. Eventually, several months later I got a cheque for 70 euro to cover my hotel room that night. Castlebar is not a good hospital to go if you're needing healthcare. Unfortunately we have no choice.

Smokers at main door constantly over the past two years that we have been attending. Very unhygienic hospital. On one admission, there was no food, tea or water given to diabetic patient and excuse was 'he was sleeping', not very caring attitude. Was not given his insulin or medication either and kept on a trolley in A&E. Wasn't given a container to vomit into and basically abandoned with other patients also on trollies. Was severely dehydrated and he was given no fluids. Disgraceful and very badly managed hospital.

I experienced the very best of care in every respect in Mayo General. I'm a retired nurse, became very ill on a holiday in Mayo and was brought by ambulance to Castlebar. From the minute I was wheeled in to A&E I was so impressed. If there's a proper way to run a public hospital, Mayo has it nailed. The two consultants I saw were utter professionals. I felt really well cared for in every respect. Everyone was so friendly and caring. Even the hospital food was absolutely lovely with great choices........once I felt able to eat. The nurses were all lovely, and I was so impressed at how lovely the care assistants were to a few confused elderly patients in my ward. Big thumbs up to Mayo General!

The worst care I have ever received. Came in by ambulance as my vehicle was part of a hit and run and I was found unconscious. Among other things, there was no note of this! I was told I could go at 2.30am. I had a concussion and whiplash and broken bones. This is outrageous. I would never recommend this hospital. I am still traumatised by the unprofessional and cavalier treatment I received.

A cleaner came in to clean bed on ward after patient leaving. It is no wonder there are bugs in the hospital. She was on her phone and there was no effort in cleaning -blood still left on floor. There should be a supervisor checking work. If it was s hotel, the accommodation manager would check every room. If there was a deck scrub, I think people would be shocked as to how much dirt is on the ground on the wards. I wonder is it ever swabbed?

Attended this hospital on a Saturday evening with my 8-year old daughter who had broken her arm. Was quickly seen by the triage nurse who checked it over and gave pain meds. We then had to wait for a couple of hours for the doctor to see her. Seen and sent for x ray. On arrival back from x-ray, seen immediately by doctor again and x-ray read on the spot and explained to us. Had another hour or so wait for a temporary cast to be applied and appointment given to see the trauma team on Monday morning. Cast applied, appointment arranged and sent home with good advice on pain relief. Attended outpatients on the Monday and while very busy, was very well organised. Every member of staff seemed to know their role and carried it out quickly and efficiently. Had seen the doctor and hard cast applied by two very professional and friendly nurses in under two hours. Her follow up appointment for the clinic arrived the very next day by post. It was my first time attending this hospital and I have no hesitation in attending it again. This is the standard of care that is needed in our hospital system. The only thing I have to complain about was the attitude of one of the nurses towards us because we live in Co. Galway. Told us that Galway hospital would be nearer to us (even though it is not) and that they were trying to get patients from co. Galway to stay in Galway. Other than that, Mayo General Hospital is the best one I have attended yet.

There are many good nurses, but then there are many who I wouldn't want to be cared for again by. I was hospitalised for 12 days there. The food was horrible. Be careful who you talk to and what you talk about. In my experience, the nurses go back to the nurses station and share your information. I was warned by one nurse there to keep quiet about personal issues, etc... I expected better quality of care.

I was taken in to A&E after a cycle accident. It was not busy that evening. I had hit my head and my helmet was split. I was seen by a junior doctor for a quick examination and sent home. I had the broken helmet with me. Some weeks later I began to get headaches. I went back to A&E as l had paid €100 and it stated on the invoice that I could come back if I had any problem relating to this accident within six weeks. There were only two patients in the waiting area. I was seen by a nurse who told me I should have gone to my GP. When I pointed out the six weeks moratorium she reluctantly gave me another half-hearted examination and said it had nothing to do with the accident. I had a brain scan in Galway and they found that the headache was due to the after effects of concussion from the accident.

The ward and bathrooms were not cleaned properly. Staff did not adequately wash their hands when moving from one ward to another and from patient to patient. Hygiene standards are not good enough for a hospital. Noisy wards with lights left on all night. Some staff were exellent and others should not be there. Very poor management overall. Hope I never have to go back.

My daughter has a serious condition and I insisted that she was covered by a really good health plan and that it was imperative for us, and other patients, that she get a private room. We were sent to a side room off A&E for hours. They informed us a room was ready and we were taken to a six-bed public ward. I'm afraid I lost the plot and insisted they take us back down to the A&E room we were in, at least it was private. Due to her condition, a lot of the ward noise was upsetting her. I know we hit hospital at peak of flu season, but no-one could even be bothered to come talk to us and listen to why it was imperative that my daughter had a private room.

I went to the hospital as an outpatient. When I went to the person who deals with appointments, they condescendingly informed me I would be waiting months. When I informed them I pay for private health care, their attitude changed! My health care didn't cover Mayo General, so I was told it would cost €250.00 and I could try and claim back some of the money from my health insurer. I agreed and said ok let's go with that. The staff member opened the diary which was practically EMPTY for appointments. I was appalled at how they could treat one person over another regardless of whether you have health insurance or not! A pen pusher with power, absolutely zero manners and an empty diary! Result: I moved appointment to a different hospital as I couldn't be dealing with that kind of social class injustice, even though I had insurance, I wouldn't give them my money on principle.

Speaking on behalf of a family member who was a patient here, the treatment was extremely poor. There was no communication or clarity. We were told she would see a consultant who would explain more, or advise on some questions that could not be answered, but no doctors came. The overall feeling was that no doctor was willing to take responsibility and passed it on the the next and the next. The patient was then discharged even though there were still concerns. After being discharged the patient returned to hospital two days later and was sent to ICU. Ten new medications were never reviewed or explained. The only good thing I have to say about this hospital is that the A&E department and ICU were very attentive. Very informative and personal.

Absolutely ridiculous hospital. An average wait time is apparently 8+ hours. People left sitting there for so long being told 'Oh you'll be next', 'Oh the night staff are coming on, they'll deal with you first'. It's not good enough. Understandably there are emergencies but these hospitals would have less people in the waiting room if they managed it properly. If it wasn't the local hospital I'd avoid it. Disgraceful place.

We arrived at A&E at 10 pm. The person that called us back went to put an IV in my 9-year-old daughter but was not wearing gloves which got me by surprise?! The cleanliness of the cubicle we were in was disgusting. The sheet looked like it wasn't changed after the patient before us and when my daughter fell asleep, the carer pulled up the bed rail that was covered in blood from the person who was in that bed before us!! That is so unhygienic and I was disgusted!!

My wife had a missed miscarriage and a D&C was performed today. She had already been scanned and treated by staff in the EPU who were absolutely fantastic. Dr Mohammed is simply a wonderful man and we could not say enough positive things about the man. All the nurses and staff in the Gyne ward were just lovely - so helpful and kind. They could not have done more despite being ran off their feet. It was a first pregnancy and was hard and upsetting. However, the service of excellence we received and the kindness shown made it so much easier. From the bottom of our hearts thank you most sincerely.
