The consultant was of very poor performance when it came to the after-care of the patient concerned. After the surgery, the patient was complaining of servere pain while crying to the consultant, but was dismissed as an exaggerator. The patient was told to go home, but she had been told specifically before the surgery that she would have to be kept in over night to be monitored after the surgery, but this never happened, nor was it consulted with the patient beforehand.

I cannot speak too highly of Cappagh Hospital. The level of care and the patience of the staff was above and beyond the call of duty - not just to myself but to all the patients in the ward, some of whom rang their bells often! I just had a left hip replacement there, and would not hesitate in going back for the right one if necessary.

I have to commend every member of staff I came across. All the surgical team, theatre staff, nursing staff, the catering staff, the cleaners, etc... everyone was amazing, caring, and made it all the easier to get through. It is a lovely old hospital (if I can get away with calling a hospital lovely), with a calm, comfortable atmosphere.

The nurse asked me to lie on my stomach which was very uncomfortable, and I had to stay like that for 20 minutes while waiting for the Doctor to appear. I could not fully lie down and had to hold myself up with my arms. I was getting a spinal epidural injection for pain, and when the doctor was filling up the injection needle, I asked him if this was the needle he was using, as it was nearly as big as a small knitting needle. He stated 'no' which did not make sense to me, as he did not fill up another needle. I was informed the needle would be tiny when I asked the nurse beforehand! He ignored any questions I asked and continued talking medical issues with the nurse who was helping and it was nothing to do with my procedure. When he plunged the needle in my spine he asked if I was alright, and I could not reply as my face was contorted in pain, and I knew I could not make a move as this was a very dangerous spinal area he was injecting. When he finished I could feel myself lightheaded. Nothing was explained, treatment was like being on a conveyer belt.

The surgeon who was supposed to carry out my surgery didn't. Neither surgeon met with me before OR after my surgery to discuss any questions I had. I had severe pain and swelling at the back of my leg for two weeks post-op which I was told may have been a blood clot but despite contacting the ward on several occasions I was told that I had to go and wait in my nearest A&E to get checked (despite waiting times of 72+ hours). I was told by the doctor in Cappagh that they would arrange an appointment to return 6 weeks post-op for assessment with the surgeon only to be told five days before this appointment that I actually had to make the appointment for the Mater Hospital and that I had to make this appointment myself. All in all, the care you receive in Cappagh when you are there is 9/10 but the care you receive after you leave there would have to be 2/10.

Explanation of procedure and general care all excellent, although a long wait for surgery. Cappagh is a fantastic hospital and more money should be made available to enable waiting lists to be reduced.

Relaxed atmosphere which did not compromise patient care in any way. Care delivered in a very personal way. All staff had time to listen and explain.

An excellent hospital experience with outstanding care by the staff. I would also like to compliment the physio department and especially the occupational therapy department who prepared me for as much independence as was possible on going home. Well done and thanks to all

Good care, very good staff. Hospital building is outdated, like a 1950s religious institution. Crucifixes should not appear in public buildings.

This is generally a well run hospital and very clean. My issue would be with the admin staff in outpatients, they do not think of patient and give the impression "just give me details and get over with it". Privacy would be an issue here as patients have to line up and do not feel like letting everyone else know their problems.

-Very well run hospital, pity about the long and getting longer waiting lists for admission -patient is treated along best practice guidelines -would have appreciated a little more info on discharge in terms of wound care etc -visiting hours are quite restricted but this is to the benefit of the patient

I have never seen such a clean building in all my time. The ward was spotless. Yet, all the patients were moved out so that it could be cleaned!!!! Well done to all. It might be an idea for other hospitals to learn a thing or two from here.

It was my father who was an inpatient, having knee replacement surgery. I accompanied him on many of his outpatient appointments and visited him as an inpatient. The staff were wonderful, friendly and extremely helpful in all areas at all times and the hospital itself was extremely clean. I was very impressed by my father's treatment at all stages.
