Would highly recommend this hospital. Had spinal surgery there last September and the care given by everyone was excellent. My surgeon was excellent and a true gentleman.

I had surgery and spent two days in the Mater Private. Definitely will never go back. While my consultant was excellent in every way, the nursing care was appalling. I was treated as just a number and was attended to by a different nurse every time. No one explained what the process was going to be which left me very fretful before the operation. If I ever require surgery again I will definitely find a surgeon who works in another hospital.

The patient developed an allergy after a few days and we found it quite difficult to get readmitted for observation. There was only one doctor on duty at the weekend on the relevant floor. Surely, more staff should have been on duty?

I feel this hospital is a money-making machine and the patient is the cash cow. If your problem is multidisciplinary, forget it, there is a very bad approach in this sense. You never get to see your own consultant and the duty one does not have a clue about your history. All I got was excuses and a lot of bluffing. I am one very unhappy customer.

I pay top dollar to use this hospital and the care standard by doctors was brutal. I was admitted with a particular issue which is dangerous but I was released and told it's normal by a doctor. I was told after discharge that I had a very bad deep bacterial infection and needed treatment. I came home and rang my doctor and he is appalled at the treatment . I was let home with a blood count of ten which signals I am anaemic but this also was never treated. Having spent six days there I'm so annoyed at the lack of care and results coordination between consultants. I feel sick and have been left to sort my own treatment, this is appalling.

The secretary to the doctor I attended was the rudest person I have ever had the misfortune to meet.

Lack of cleaning. For my pre-op assessment, did not see all the teams.

From the receptionist to leaving the hospital, I can only praise the full staff 100%. My time there was excellent, pain free and if I had reason to need to have any further procedure, I wouldn’t hesitate.

I was admitted under a consultant for not any particular reason. He spoke to me to say hello and sent me a bill for nearly 500 Euro. I was visited by another rushing consultant who scribbled a few lines on a piece of paper and told me to visit them privately the following week. This I did and this doctor was very condescending throughout the appointment. They took my money and when my GP rang to ask my results, they said it was in my head and there was nothing wrong. I have since been diagnosed by another professional with a chronic disease.

The standard of care and the facilities at Mater Private Cork were fantastic. I can only describe my experience as outstanding. It is truly a state of the art hospital and the nursing care was outstanding. A big thank you to all the nursing staff and the lovely cleaning staff. So modern and clean, so efficient and well run. Thank god I had health insurance as I feel you certainly would not receive such good care in the public system.

This hospital is very well run, clean, and dependable. I went in for a day case and the only critical thing I would say was that I had to share a room with another patient when I was recovering. The last time I was in for the same procedure I had a room all to myself. I could hear the other patient discussing her medical history, so maybe a privacy issue there. Overall the staff were very caring, attentive, and knowledgeable so I would recommend highly this hospital.

I actually attended the emergency dept but this was not listed in options. I would urge anyone thinking of attending emergency dept at Mater private to think twice. Yes max they will charge you on the day is €600 plus whatever they can screw your VHI for. However it doesn't end there. If you have a fracture and have to come back you will need to take out a bank loan to keep up with consultation fees, x-rays, split charges, physio etc etc... Your insurance won't pay any of this directly. Please consider this before you are left in debt. I think it's a money making machine plain and simple. The most efficient dept there seems to be finance who will bombard you with calls and threatening letters. Even when they have billed you in error. Beware. If you think it's a broken bone, please do yourself a favour and go to the public hospital where the aftercare us included in your initial fee. I really wasn't impressed at all with any aspect of care at the Mater Private.

Had an operation here late last year. After admission I was left sitting on a chair in a drafty corridor as beds were not available for patients going to theatre. No staff member spoke to me for 3 1/2 hours. After five hours I got up to my bed on my ward. After returning from theatre I was very nauseous and felt dizzy. At about 3am I needed to go to the bathroom. I rang the bell for the nurse and was disconnected from my drip. She then disappeared. This was my first time on my feet after the operation. I made it to the bathroom and back and she didn't return for another 15 minutes. The nurses on during the day were brilliant but it was a different story at night. The two nurses that were on repeatedly came into the room turning on all the lights and talking at full volume. One nurse kept forcing medication into my cannula even though my vein was about to collapse and it was very painful as it was easier for her than to re-site it. I still have a scar on my hand from that. They seemed to resent being there and were taking it out on the patients.

My son Anil Ambat underwent surgery after a motor accident. Surgery was successful and he is getting back to normal life. Though his condition was very critical, services were very effecient. We are highly indebted to Mater hospital especially to those who attended him in the time of emergency. Special thanks are due to Dr Seamus Morris and nurses Ms Soney, Ms Shibin, Ms Lola, Ms Paulin, Merlin, Ms Nancy Ms Jessy and others. Thanks and best regards.

My mam was a patient in this hospital for four nights last week for surgery and the care and attention she got from all staff was fantastic. Dr Edwards who completed the surgery was absolutely fantastic and treated my mam with such kindness. From nurses to care assistants to catering and household, each one of you was so professional in your job. Thank you so much and to Sinead Stapelton for being so nice to mam on her day of surgery. Fantastic staff nurse.

I attended the Mater Hospital Cork for a colonoscopy and endoscopy. Dr Barry O'Connor was a pure gentleman who treated me with respect and was aware of my dignity at all times. He explained everything to me and should I ever have problems again I will definitely be going back to him. I could not recommend him highly enough. I would also like to mention Nurses Roisin and Margaret who were very kind and caring towards me. Also a special thank you to the anaesthetist who did a wonderful job in putting me to sleep.

My GP notes were misplaced somewhere between A&E and admission. The admission doctor report, which included my GP letter and medication list, was not transferred to my ward file. My regular meds were not administered until my third day. I was prescribed drugs that the pharmacy could not get and I was informed after the fact. I tried to address concerns with the consultant but he would not listen, said he did 'not have time'. I was treated with sheer disrespect. This was witnessed and noted by family, some occurrences of disrespect when I was too ill to notice, but also at times blatant to all, even other staff who apologised. The apparent loss of notes was recorded by myself after I was told. This was ignored. I did not receive some of my regular meds until I was about to leave. I was contradicted by one of the nurses when I noted it took an hour to turn off an IV alarm despite having asked. A most unfortunate experience for a hospital group with such a fine tradition since I first encountered it in the pioneering days of Mr. Nelligan, RIP whose pioneering work saved my father.

On morning of discharge the nurse wasn't very positive with comments to mum. When a patient leaves I think positive comments are better going forward.

I have a procedure every three months, but when I started it was every week. I have never seen the doctor while I'm having it done - that's about 4 years now. The payment from the VHI - he gets 90 euro every time.

I wasn't expecting my MRI diagnosis of a brain tumour - the staff of the MRI handled the matter brilliantly as I could have gone into shock with such news but they were clear and informative in their communications with me and referred me promptly to Dr. O'Connor. I got full information, and the team worked really well with Beaumount to deal with my illness.

Overall medical care was good. Nursing observations or communication however was not sasatisfactory. Machine alarms not acted on immediately, nursing staff not visibly observing patient which leads to concern and low confidence.

Felt very undervalued as a patient. Was sent for tests by a consultant - was not given a follow up appointment to get results. No letter/results sent to GP. After paying for the consultation as well as for tests, I felt very under valued. Also very unhelpful secretary - not at all helpful! Got better treatment in a public hospital!
